Submit to oppose

Corporate occupation of public space and destruction of the Commons!

Please urgently distribute and submit to oppose:

1) the expansion of aquaculture in the SOUNDS &

2) Government's fast-track planning and dump process, intended to help corporations to externalise costs to local community, future generations and to the environment.

Sustain Our Sounds (SOS) opposes recreational areas in the Marlborough Sounds being cordoned off for private profit.

NZ King Salmon is a Malaysian-owned company and the New Zealand Government has brought in legislation and a fast-track planning process to make it easier for overseas companies to use our waters for aquaculture –

This sets a precedence for New Zealand!

Incidentally King Salmon majority owner Malaysia’s TIONG also owns Earnslaw, one of NZ's largest PINE FORESTRY corporations.

Submissions Close on 2nd May at 5pm.

Go to this link to guide you through the process:

The Sounds are for everyone: SOS believes there is room for everyone in the Marlborough Sounds, as long as the different activities are managed and kept in balance with the natural environment. King Salmon’s proposal to farm in prohibited zones is going too far.

Fast-track planning process: King Salmon has applied to the Government’s Environmental Protection Authority for a Plan Change to get special permission to set up marine farms in prohibited zones. This is an attempt to over-ride planning rules that were consulted and agreed to by the people of Marlborough and the Marlborough District Council.

Effect on the environment: Marine farms pollute the surrounding water with fish waste (faeces) and uneaten food pellets which include poultry, sheep and cattle products. This waste smothers life on the seafloor. The extra nutrients from fish waste may also increase the risk of poisonous algal bloom.

Foreign ownership: NZ King Salmon is majority owned by the Tiong company of Malaysia. They do not pay anything to occupy the waters of the Marlborough Sounds. If this application is granted more public space will be locked up for private profit that goes overseas.
