Urgent advice needed on creating a mini desert food forest

Potential project - food forest/school garden to help develop Permaculture in the UAE

Dear Permaculture community,

I potentially have an opportunity to develop a permaculture oasis/desert food forest/school garden in Dubai,UAE. The Head Teacher is very supportive but naturally wants initial sketches/costings etc. I would really appreciate some advice and information from anyone who knows about costing, desiging and creating small desert food forests/gardens.

The garden would be the centre-piece of the school grounds so must be aesthetically sound and contain a shaded seating area. It will 'fill' what is currently a sunken concrete ampitheatre which is approximately 30m in diameter, with 5 descending levels/steps of approx. 1.25m, and a centre floor of approx. 17m.

At the moment I have suggested combining a couple of purpose-built suspended shading structures to match those at the entrance to the school, and provide some instant shade, but then to integrate them with a canopy of date palms and other species such as figs and pomegranates, and so on to create a food forest. I was inspired by Geoff Lawton's film Greening the desert and another about the 2000 year old food forest in Morocco! The circular steps could be converted into raised beds for kitchen crops. A drip-feed irrigation and eventually a grey-water system could be developed from the washrooms.

I have never done anything like this before so it is a rather daunting but exciting prospect. Any ideas, information, costing plans etc would be really appreciated to help fill the Permaculture void in the UAE. If I get the go ahead I may well be asking for some volunteers who are passing through Dubai in the future!

Many thanks,

Gaina

Vahik (Vik) Avaneas : Hello Gaina

First of all . sorry that i will be miss out on your presentation at the Dubai shelter at the end of the month, as i will be in Armenia for a two weeks trip.

WE finished the second stage of ALESS school garden. With the students we planted some summer fruits, Water melon .rock melon .squash ,some herbs, mint, coriander , okra even shallots . They are all doing well. Children have been watering every morning with their watering can but it is getting too hot for them ,so i will be installing automatic drip irrigation before i leave. The fruit trees that you were here when we planted are all doing well . the bananas in the circle now have five leaves each, four extra leaves in two months, that is very rewarding.

Part of the third stage is to install a shade tunnel with cooling system. I have designed an evaporating cooling system to operate with solar panels to cool the whole area of the garden beds only, totaling 120sqm . It will be costing AED 12000, this is our biggest cost, which we need to find the funding first. By the time we finished the project ,without the cost of future maintenance, we are looking at total cost of AED 35000 , or about US$10000 , including my humble consultation, design and project management fee.

I hope this will gives you some indication of pricing. However I am happy to get together with you and Nazik in Dubai and work out the design and proper costing.

Geoff Lawton : Yes we can do this using wicking beds, aquaponics, worm farms, and over flow drip down to center piece shaded food forest. The teachers and kids will love it. Can you send us any plans, photos and google earth link and we can work on it with our interns? Geoff
