2014 Upper Pond and Swale Project

Project: Campbell Family Farm

I am installing the first of what will be a
total of 8 water retaining ponds on the farm. This first pond is being placed
at the very highest point on the property. Connecting each pond will be large
swales dug on contour.

7/31. I'm re pretty much done with clearing the
area for the upper pond and the first swale. Next i'll be surveying,
leveling, and marking off contour lines. I observed for several months the
water run-off patterns after rains so I have identified specific capture points
to begin the swales to direct the water flow energy to where we want it. Stay tuned for updates and new pictures as the project progress.

8/2: Today my youngest son and I built a Bunyip Level and used it to begin marking contour lines for the upper pond and swale. We used two 2x2x8 ft boards. 60 feet of 1/2 clear poly tubing. Two 1/2" brass compression fittings and a package of metal 1/2 electric conduit brackets. We marked off the boards with feet and inch measurmemts and mounted the tubing to the boards using the brackets. I added red food dye coloring to the water in the tube to make it easier to see the water level.

We then used the level to mark out the contour lines of the pond and swale. We'll be using Lil'Red (our tractor) to begin moving earth.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Member

Member

A member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
