Upper Water Pond and Wood Chipper

Finished clearing the forest and about 70% complete with digging the pond.

Its taken a while to dig out the pond with such a small tractor, but slow and steady wins the race!! Specially with no debt. We purchased a small wood chipper to chip the branches and leaves from clearing the land.

The wood mulch made with the chipper is being used to put on top of compost in gardening areas and to fill the inside of our swales. As the soil is course sand almost down to 80 inches/ 204 cm we hve to line the inside of our swales 18 inches deep in wood chips to hold any kind of moisture. We've even kicked around the idea of lining the swales with plastic liner or clay and then putting the wood chips on top.

The last image is a soil profile from the pond area. As you can see, the top 8 inches of the soil profile are mostly sand with less than .5% organic matter with little to no roots in this zone. This is called a Silstid Soil profile. Any native plants that exist here have deeper roots into the next 24 to 80 inches. With a water drain rate of 1.3 inches/ 3.3 cm per hour you can see we have big challenges in both soil condition and water retention.
