Key Hole garden

Posted by Kathryn Michaud about 9 years ago

Built my first Key Hole garden in the Fall of 2013, and this is what happened next...

So, in the Fall of 2013 I finally gathered enough info and materials to put together a key hole garden.  I figured that doing this in the Fall would let it "percolate" over winter.  It was put in a tight spot between a small deck and a young apple tree, and was approximatly 6' across by 2' deep (<>).  I used an old double staked perrot cage placed upside down for the compost bin.

I filled it with what was on hand out the barn, barn yard, and some real black soil from out of the horse paddock, filled the compost bin...and waited...

Come Spring I planted herbs, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, and the thing took off like a rochet.  In particular the cucumbers, they latched onto the apple tree, the compost cage, and the arbor of the deck.  The peppers were hard to find under so much growth.

I realize the site for the key hole wasn't ideal and need some shape modification with added trellis.  This Spring hope to build 2 more key hole gardens where there is better maneuverability.
