Utah Proof of Concept

Project: Onchenda Open Global Food Co-op

Posted by Harrison Quigley about 9 years ago

Onchenda Open Global Food Co-op rcently incorporated as a Benefit Corporation (social enterprise) in Utah, where we will be conducting our proof of concept pilot in Logan. We have taken on another Permie as a partner, Joshua Choate, who owns a two-story commercial building in Logan containing an organic food restaurant, medicinal herbs shop, yogo studio, meeting rooms, a refrigerated storage room, and a data center. We are in the process of evaluating e-commerce/m-commerce platforms that are multi-vendor and multi-lingual on which local Grower Members can open their own virtual stores in our online farmer's market.

Once we have the platform properly configured, we will recruit local farmer's market and CSA farmers, market gardeners, and value-added food producers to open their free virtual stores, as well as Mentors to help those that want to start their own market gardens or transition from mono-crop chemical farming to organic polyculture farming.

Upon successful completion of our Logan, Utah pilot, we will establish local Utah food webs in Salt Lake City, Cedar City, and St. George. We are also in the process of opening branch offices in Taiwan and Chile in preparation for our public launch in order to establish a beachhead into the Mandarin- and Spanish-speaking markets, respectively. Once these latter food webs are operational, we have contacts on the ground in Mexico, China, Vietnam and Philippines who want to bring Onchenda's model into their markets.

If you would like to be a Grower or Mentor for your area, please register (it's free) under "How it Works" at http://www.onchenda.com.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
