Question on Neonicotinoids

Posted by Rodney Robinson almost 9 years ago

Hey all.   I almost bought some blueberry bushes without asking if they use Neonicotinoids.

Anybody have any thoughts on Neonicotinoids?

I see Wikiepedia says that Neonicotinoids have a half life of 34 days in full sun.  Not sure what that means though.

Luckily I am on the Peakprosperity.com mailing list and I had commented on their board about an article about bees and pesticides.  So I get emails that have the other comments people make and Pinecarr talked about almost buying potted blueberries that had fine print in the label that they had used Neonicotinoids on that plant so he said that he put it back on the shelf.

Florie Brown : Hi Rodney I read many reports about Neonicotinoids just before I completed my Royal Horticultural Course and from what I gathered they use Neonicotinoids in every pest killer. A test was carried out on pests in green houses to prove it remained in the soil and environment for quite a while. It was Holand and Germany that had a lengthy report about bees carrying the poison from flowers of plants to other hive becaude they were disoriented and could not find their way back to their own hive, hence killing several other bee colonies.

Corey Schmidt : Half life means in that amount of time half of the substance will have degraded, if there was 1 oz. to begin with, after 34 days in full sun there will be 1/2 oz, after 64 days, 1/4 oz, after 98 days 1/8 oz, etc. there's probably not an oz of the stuff, just to demonstrate how the math works.
