New Project- Fingers Crossed

Posted by Leisa Cox almost 9 years ago

Hi All,

I am in the process of talking with my daughter's primary school, in regards to putting in a Food Forest. I am hoping to link it to subjects, canteen, after school care "OOSH", who are currently running with a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.

My idea is to source materials locally from newspaper donations, parents who may own excavation equipment, or local suppliers offering free advertising in the school newsletter. We would probably have to buy plants.

There has been a lot of rain in our area lately, and saw it all lying around going to waste. parts of the playground have been out of bounds, as it's still so boggy.  In summer, it can be very dry here. SO, I thought swales!!!!

I have run a project previously, in my children's old preschool that seemed to work well. I thought we are going to be coming here for the next 7years, let's make it a better place than when we got here. Could start with a food forest, and see what happens.

Chatting on Friday,......see if they're keen.

S. Symens : Afterthought: You know Matt Powers, also a student of Geoff Lawton, has put together a permaculture manual and workbook for use in primary schools? I'm sure there's another opportunity there! Check it out: http://www.thepermaculturestudent.com/

Rodney Robinson : Good one Leisa! What follows is a postion by athryn Tracy. ----> Q: How Do We Afford All Those Trees and Plants?

Posted by Kathryn Tracy 3 days ago (report)

Answer: We don't. We invest in Permaethos' Plant Propagation Course instead. We have 80+ acres to design if we live long enough LOL. We want to put in a cider apple orchard and a pecan and walnut grove plus all the catalpa and mayhaw trees for the ponds. We need tons of leguminous trees and forage trees and firewood trees and lumber trees and comfrey and berries and grapes and all the other fruit trees for the swales. It would cost a large fortune, just in plants. If your swales are to be very big, maybe this will work for you. Perhaps one can be rented. The video says "raised bed" but I used this machine to make a 300 plus foot small swale about 10 inches deep and 20 inches wide which could have been deeper and wider. https://youtu.be/vhfjUSusROc All the best.

Leisa Cox : Thanks for the feedback and support Corey, S.S, & Rodney. I will look Matt Powers up again in a bit more detail. I have to find out more about what they want out of it. I am wary of thrusting my grand plans onto them. I don't want to scare them off. These are new concepts for 99% of the people involved. This is quite a suburban area, we live on acerage out on the border of the school catchment. I can see an opportunity to start small Swales, and work down hill over time. Thanks Rodney will look Kathryn's posts up, sounds very interesting. I think I will just listen alot first, observe, suggest, and see what happens. That doesn't mean I haven't been designing in my head every night for weeks....Lol!!! Let you all know how the "First chat" goes.....Stay tuned. Might need to pick your brains. Bit excited.

Leisa Cox : Interesting chat with the local school teacher. There are 700-800 students, so quite large grounds. They have, Chooks, large worm farm, about 4 neglected raised garden beds, 3 very big water tanks spread around. There's also a 1980's leaking concrete frog pond garden bed, with bad soil, huge monstereo..... He would like a Native Bush Tucker/ Sensory/Frog pond garden. I have agreed to renovate that garden, 5x12m. He's also getting an array of fruit trees, unknown. I suggested they go over in and down hill from the chook run. So for now, just researching a bit more about BushTucker plants, will draw it up for them and put together an action plan. Wish I could picks up. This a typical neglected school garden in Australia.

Leisa Cox : Sorry, I should say I do commend them for reviving it. These are plenty of native bush tucker berry plants. Meant, I wish I could put pictures up. Gotta love spellcheck.
