Swales Slow Progress

Project: Daddykirbs Farm

Posted by Blake Kirby over 8 years ago

That title could sound negative to some, but I'm learnign that the SLOW progress sometimes is just what is needed to teach me to observe and interact in a method that works with the land.

I now have 3 main swales. All of them are acting as a larger connected system, but that connection isn't perfect yet.

The first swale higher in the system is developing beautifully. It is near the chicken coops. Right now in the dry season I have a larger kiddie pool on the edge of the swale. The ducks play in the pool. Every few days I dump it out and re-fill. This keeps the bottom of the swale moist.

The second swale is about halfway between the top swale and the larger swales in the orchard. It is the dryest swale going right now. There are no water inputs right now at all. I lost one tree. The Mulberry tree planted on the end is hanging in there ok, but it's struggling.

In the orchard at the bottom of my system is the largest swale. This swale was dug out a little more this Summer. It's now about 4 inches deeper and mostly level. I'm very encouraged to see this shaping up. There are minor amounts of water going into the orchard to keep the fruit trees alive through the hot Summer.

All in all I love what is happening on my little farm. Yes, sometimes I wish it were faster, but it is fun working with the land and having it teach me :)

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
