Let's Get Dirty!

Project Type

Urban, Rural, Residential, Community, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

The Philosophy Behind “Let’s Get Dirty! 72 hours of intensive, hands-on training and classroom presentations in the art of permaculture design. 25 community members, students, teachers and at-risk youth will give up their weekends to study bio-intensive farming, recycling, waste management, land & water conservation, and a whole lot more! The program will culminate in a Graduation Ceremony for these newly trained permaculture practitioners. Up to 15 of the registration spaces will go to youth between the ages of 15-25; the most forgotten members of society who commit most of the crimes in our communities. The cost of re-skilling our youth is much cheaper per person than incarcerating them. Newly certified practitioners will be empowered to start their own green business or live a more sustainable life style. Using this type of training program can help to reduce unemployment rates, reduce crime, teach new skills, and provide valuable information on living a healthier life. Certifications in Permaculture Design can assist in helping our youth to be more marketable and employable.

Project Description

Schedule: April 25th & 26th, May 30th & 31st, June 21st, July 25th & 26th, August 29th, September 26th, October 24th Classes run 9am-5pm with a 45-minute lunch break. Students must provide their own lunch. Course Content: This class covers the basic concepts of the permaculture design system, demonstrated through techniques for sustainable living in densely populated areas. Students will acquire a tool-kit for living in the urban and suburban environment in a way that supports themselves and their community, independent from the toxic products of big corporations and government handouts. The class will emphasize self-reliance and local, community-based resilience. What to Expect: This is a rigorous academic course with standards that exceed those of most college-level classes. Students will be expected to complete numerous homework assignments including readings, observation & design exercises, and a final design project. Each student will work regularly with a mentor between classes who will tailor the curriculum to meet the individual interests & goals of the student. Students should not miss more than 1 day of class, and absolutely must be present during the first two classes, as well as the final three (7/19, 8/16 & either 9/19 or 20). Students who complete the course in a satisfactory manner will receive an internationally recognized certification in permaculture design. The Syllabus: Here is a very simplified syllabus (a much more detailed syllabus, as well as work-book will be given to students on the first day of class or shortly prior): Days 1&2: • Intro to permaculture • History of permaculture & environmentalism • Indigenous roots of permaculture • Intro to ecology • Intro to systems analysis • Intro to observation techniques & sensory awareness Days 3&4: • Design process & techniques • Resource audits & analysis • Presentation skills • Deep observation • Professional permaculture • Permaculture activism • Community design Days 5,6&7: • Wild & semi-wild permaculture • Wild & deep ecology • Reading the landscape • Cultural renewal • Spiritual ecology • Sustainable community design • Home-scale permaculture • Neighborhood renewal • Social permaculture • Financial permaculture • Sustainable technologies Day 8: • Introduction to the design practicum Day 9: • Design practicum check-in Day 10: • Design presentations & feedback

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Member

Member

A member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation.

Male memberFemale member

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

unverified

PDC

People who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world.

verified

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

pri_verified

PRI PDC

People who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world.

pdc_teacher

PDC Teacher

People who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
