Principia Upper School's sustainability classes completed a unit on food and where it comes from, and decided to create an orchard that follows the permaculture philosophy. They researched what permaculture is, how it works, and its effects on the enviornment. They then added compost to the berms, created by a Bobcat machine, to help break the clay soil apart. After the compost, they added irrigation tape, landscape fabric, and eventually, the plants. They planted them in guilds as well as in spots that the plants will thrive the most. The orchard will serve as a place for classes to come and learn the basics of permaculture. The produce grown in the orchard will be used to educate the community about permaculture.
