FeltEssentialCottage (ChataChwilEsencja)

Project Type

Rural, Residential, Commercial, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

The goal is to develop an old rural residential site and turn it into an educational as well as demonstration permaculture center, hopefully with support of the local community, which should benefit from surplus in produce and from various activities taking place in the center.

Project Description

FeltEssentialCottage is presently an old, less than an acre rural settlement located in the Mazurian Lakes district in northern Poland. It's situated in a tiny village, at a small lake, among dense forests. This favourable location should enable me to start an eco-homestay (in the existing house and maybe also the barn - if converted), which will help to raise funds for developing an educational and demonstration permaculture site. I plan to deliver courses/workshops in permaculture, crafts, herbal medicine and other natural healing modalities.

The beginning of renovation of the buildings and the garden establishment had to be postponed; it is now scheduled for the next spring.

I hope to see enough people coming together in relatively short time to form a permaculture group, which could become an additional source of funds and available hands for further development.

Short term - coming season - minimum goals (very modest funds):

- finalizing the design for the site and make a step by step plan of action

- starting implementation: building soil (mulching), fencing, urgent repairs in existing buildings and structures

- preparing a room (s) in the house for the future volunteer/wwoofer (workshops for volunteers)

- making a compost pile

- establishing a herb/vegetable garden (possible investment in a small greenhouse to secure production, freestanding for now, as the house needs renovation)

- taking care of existing trees

- installing a simple rain water harvesting system, initially for watering the garden only

- securing the neighbors' interest and support (by sharing seeds, asking advice on local conditions, using their mulch surplus on my site etc)

- securing cooperation with the one existing homestay in the village (hosting events, rooms for my first guests)

- making an agreement with the neighbors as to the community well located on my property (5 houses sharing bills, amount of water pumped, conservation, responsibility, future solutions etc)

- solving the problem of leaking septic tanks (this could be the first consultancy task, as it's the whole village problem)

- building a compost toilet re-using an old existing outdoor toilet

- checking possibilities/interest for the above mentioned courses/workshops

Hopefully start of serious (although basic) renovation of the buildings with a hired crew of builders plus a fellow permaculture consultant. Establishment of a garden and planting trees.

Updates will be provided here and on my blog (www.feltessentialcottage), where there's also more information about the site and some photos.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
