I grew up on an organic farm near New York City in the 50's and 60's we never considered chemical farming because it killed earthworms and required going into debt for new equipment and we never wanted to be working for 'the bank'. We had a ready market, tourists from NY loved coming to the farm on the weekends and picking up fresh food. We were always concerned about chemical toxicity and Silent Spring just confirmed things we already suspected. Part of our farm was already managed as an environmental reserve because it and had rare flowers and old growth trees, it later became part of a conservation reserve known as Huber Woods. I was always taught to respect Nature and follow Natural Principles, this applied to everything from when to go fishing to when to plant seeds. In 1971 at the age of 23 I bought my first farm,150 acres in rural Tennessee for $25,000. My life journey has brought me to many places including including living in India and now in Byron Bay Australia. I teach natural systems for soil regeneration and for growing food naturally. I believe organics should be self reliant and growing organically should give you the ability to grow good food for less, this is a system I developed over many years and with much consideration. This is what I do now.

Paul is a 3rd generation organic farmer, gardener and horticulturist, he is currently the leading consultant for the Hidden Garden Farm project on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean (www.hiddengarden.com) He is available for on-site consultancies and organised teaching events and teaches his 5-day 'Permaculture Soils and organic fertilisers' course at the Australian Permaculture Research Institute (Zaytuna Farm) twice a year (www.permaculturenews.org). I am the managing director of Trust Nature Pty Ltd (www.trustnature.com.au) and have developed and teach Trust Natures 'BioVital System of Sustainable Soil Management'. The 5-day sustainable soil management and organic fertiliser course can be taught almost anywhere needed, longer courses are available by application (mine site reconstruction, farming groups, environmental projects etc). I have taught and worked in many countries over the past 30 years including Australia, USA, New Zealand, India, Outer Mongolia, Christmas Island and the Middle East.
The Bio-Vital System has been developed by combining heritage agriculture, organic practices, permaculture design, soil microbiology, and natural principles into an easy to understand easy to apply system. We redefine 'Sustainable agriculture' as 'our ability to build soil fertility as we improve production and reduce inputs and labour'.
Our current project is using local resources to make our own organic fertiliser and compost from local waste to grow our 'food for free'. We will have more information upcoming on this project on our website www.trustnature.com.au. For more information see the website or just drop me an email on [email protected]
