Dan Halsey, director of PRI-USA, Head Designer at Southwoods Permaculture co-author of Integrated Forest Gardening, sat down with us to talk about designing guilds and the Natural Capital™ Plant Database, a useful resource he helped Paula Westmoreland de
Beetle banks create beneficial habitat for biological control agents important to pest management. Since the effect of predation from the bank is passive and seasonally variable it is a strategy best used as part of an overall system of pest management.
Conference, convergence & edge events The 2 day conference, 8-9 September 2015, will take place at The Light, Friends House in London where there will be formal presentations, workshops, academic papers, exhibitions, music, and art.
COMING SOON!!! We will be working with Daniel Halsey from SouthWoods Forest Gardens and folks from Little Earth Farm Garden to create paddocks around the big barn. Stay tuned for before, during and after photos as well as updates on this project.
Permaculture design is systems thinking. Everything is in a relationship and defined by its relationships. Plants and harvest crops thrive when provided with the correct relationships in the soil and above ground with beneficial habitat. The urban landsca
Jessi Bloom (nwbloom.com)took our photo at the fair. We set up the designs and the talk was non-stop. Many new and familiar faces on the homesteader/prepper scene. Seeing is believing. Neil Bertrando joined me in the booth and got a good read on where

The Complete Guide to Polycultures and Plant Guilds in Permaculture Systems
Keeping the stream pure with all the activity is a challenge, but a priority.
This farmer was intrigued by permaculture and was amazed at the benefits from transforming to an integrated Food Forest Grazing System. The minimal loss of open acreage returned increased forage crops, new livestock opportunities, and harvestable windbrea

More Ponds! More Ponds! I need more Ponds! How many cows can you rotational graze on 31 acres?
A ten acre farm turns from row crops to perennial harvests.
Transitioning long fallowed fields to woodland pasture, perennial crops, and orchards requires a multi-layered agro-ecosystem design. After extensive site assessment accounting for climate, soil ecology, geology and existing ecological systems, we start

PRI/USA is proud to announce the publication of Sustainable Revolution by Juliana Birnbaum and Louis Fox. In 2009 PRI/USA supported Birnbaum and Fox by becoming their fiscal agent as they collected funds for the production of their new book and began to t
Not everything is on there, but it is a pretty good representation of the functional spaces.
This book is the first, and most comprehensive, guide about plant guilds ever written, and covers in detail both what guilds are and how to design and construct them, complete with extensive color photography and design illustrations. Included is informat
250 people showed up for the conference. It was great information from an ecological standpoint. Horrific for the uninitiated.
The database is working very well and I encourage all permaculture designers to try it out. Especially the spreadsheet download. Let me know if you would like a free access for a time to try it out.
They just need the obvious in writing I guess.
This year I have been in Haiti after a downgraded hurricane, and then in New Jersey a week after Sandy. While in New Jersey two tornadoes passed by my old house. What does they have in common?
After some years of working my way up the academic ladder (not far up really) and making permaculture a common topic, it is now a main component in a graduate horticulture course I will be teaching next summer.
In a recent class in Complex Adaptive Systems, I wanted to find a new way to relate the effects of diversity models on insect patterns and the resulting plant benefits.
Four installed. 4 more on the calendar. It is a combination keyhole and field crop design with vegetated fence.
