In the first image i have used freshly cut elderberry wood to push the branche sideways. Doing this in the first years of growth will result in good branch structure/ open canopé... Beforfe we moved to the farm, we grew some little trees from seed in our greenhouse in the city. They need a place to continue to grow, so we started digging our first swale by hand. The picture shows the result after we got a nice rainshower the other day.
