Transplanting trees and 2 inches of rain

Project: Chicagoland Permaculture at Townline Design

Posted by Daniel Brown over 11 years ago

I got the fruit trees planted. I had to do it in the rain. At least I managed to get a few good pictures.

Today I transplanted 2 apples, 2 pears, 2 cherries, 2 elderberries, 3 serviceberries, and 9 pawpaws.  Fruit is on the way!  In the swale, I also raked in bulk quantities of Dutch White Clover, Illinois Bundleflower, and Super Sugar Snap Peas.  Both the peas and the clover were innoculated with their respective micorrhyzal bacteria.  While I was out, I took cuttings from several Honey Locust and Black Locust trees and dunked them into a bucket of rooting hormone I made using young willow branches.  I'll be planting those in the swale by the end of the week.

The water damage was self evident.  A steady stream of murky water flows from the barn area, past the compost, and into the pond.  While it fills up nicely, it becomes to filthy to grow edible plants and fish.  We're going to do whatever we can to change that.  When the ground swells up with moisture from the swales, and once we use up all the compost, hopefully the water will clear up and stay fuller for longer.

Carolyn Payne-Gemmell : Hi Daniel, you could use a heap of straw to clean up the water in the pond. Lay a heap of it through the water course, it will act as a filter, and if you put a lot of straw in the pond itself the soil particles will stick to it, you can either pull the soggy straw back out after a few days or leave it in to go anaerobic , it will cause an algal bloom which will be the first vestiges of life for your pond.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
