VerdEnergia is Hiring!

Project: VerdEnergia Pacifica

Posted by Amanda Wilson almost 9 years ago

VerdEnergia is looking for an experienced permaculturist for our production manager position!
PERMACULTURE PRODUCTION MANAGER POSITION

VerdEnergia is an eight year old intentional permaculture community and reforestation project located in the mountains of Pursical, Costa Rica. We are focused on ecosystem regeneration and alternative lifestyle creation in one of the most deforested areas in the country. The project site is remotely located in a national wildlife corridor between National parks La Carara and La Congreja.

We are currently seeking a motivated, self-directed permaculturalist to implement and oversee the production of crops, including long-term plan development, on our community food forest farm. The Permaculture Production Manager is primarily responsible for maintaining and refining our pre-existing systems. This individual must be skilled at working with people and making things happen as they will work directly with the community and a supporting labor force including volunteers and employees.

Room, board, and a small stipend are provided with the possibility of more income as the farm productivity increases. We also provide the opportunity and resources to cultivate new skills in a number of different areas of sustainable community living.

Daily life at VerdEnergia begins around 5:30 am. We work between six and eight hours per day with breaks for breakfast and lunch. Saturdays are half days and Sundays are free days. We organize meal preparation and clean-up as a community and everyone is expected to contribute throughout the week. We have plenty of time for fun and during free time we enjoy our beautiful river, waterfall, and swimming pool, go for hike, check out a local soccer game, do yoga in our studio, make art and music, play games, relax, and make friends with people from all over the world.

Applicants should also be aware that it gets very hot during the day and requires some effort to get on and off site. We require an 18 month commitment with a three month trial period.

REQUIREMENTS:

- Highly organized with strong planning skills and the ability to see projects to completion. We want someone motivated to get the job done.

- Proficient in Spanish and English

- Strong passion for working with the land and regenerating degraded ecosystems

- Prior experience in agriculture and gardening. Tropical experience is a plus but not necessary. Systems-oriented individuals with strong management skills that are motivated to learn the specifics of tropical agriculture can get the job done.

- Permaculture design certified

- High energy with strong management, communication, and leadership skills

- Holistic, process-oriented thinker with an understanding of system design

- Desire and skills to live and work in community

- Strong physical stamina with the ability to work effectively in extreme weather conditions. Please note that we are farming in mountainous terrain that prohibits the use of large machinery.

- Curious and creative with a desire to live in and actively engage with permaculture systems

- Adaptable to changing systems and community environments throughout the year according to season and population

- Resonates with and supports our project goals

- Open-minded, innovative, and resourceful with a positive attitude and good sense of humor

- Able to commit for a minimum of 18 months with a three month trial period.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Production of food forest crops (perennials and annuals) including planning, planting, cultivation, fertilization, pest management, irrigation and harvesting with varying levels of support throughout the season.

- Maintenance and refinement of our current garden and crop production systems

- Management of compost and fertilizer production

- Development of a yearly production plan according to permaculture ethics and design in collaboration with community members.

- Engagement of volunteer and paid labor through appropriate training, support, and empowerment.

- Communication with volunteer coordinator, kitchen, and general farm manager regarding needs and current production.

- Ongoing evaluation of plans and programs, making appropriate changes when necessary for overall farm improvement. Collaborating with community to modify and design new systems when necessary.

- Keeping farm tools and resources organized and well managed.

- Participating in community life and contributing expertise when needed.

- If you are interested and meet our requirements, please send a resume and cover letter to: apply @ verdenergia . org

- Application deadline: June 1, 2015.

- Start date: July 2015

- Please visit our website at www.verdenergia.org for more information

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
