Pollinator Habitat Project

Project: Leafhopper Farm

Posted by Liz Crain about 8 years ago

This plan is spearheaded by K.P., a resident and landscape arcitect.

Currently Zone 1 and 2 areas near living space in residencial habitat are bare and roughly scaped to allow basic acess. Paths are forming naturally, through use and connecting of key focus points such as kitchen and shower facilties. In allowing these paths to naturally form as new structures were built and inhabited, the most effective transition points could be established to provide well staged paths and access to recourses scatterd around the property. Some paths were altered to accomidate inherited infastructure, and long term restoration of some heavily abused spaces.

In a space once used as a mechanic's shop burn pile, when first discovered during early utility location and expansion, the pile, which had been hidden under a layer of realitivly fresh top soil, the entire area was banked with a few truckloads of mulch and routinely inocculated with oyster mycelia to amend and regenerate the soil. It has sat for a few years now, occationally being tilled on the surface with more mulch, cardboard, mycelia, and organic compost.

In the mean time, the farm also invested in referbishing an old shed space into two modest heated spaces for seasonal habitation. This building, now affectionatly called "The Hen House", continues to evolve as residence eztablish routine and use within the enviornment. The above mentioned regeneration site is on key-line directly east of the new building, and offers a central focal point on the landscape. Since edible crops should not be planted in the compomized soil any time soon, other options in the shallow, but well inoculated soil drew us in the direction of flowers and native plants which will add to the restoration of the soil, while enritching the landscape for resident flaura and fona, including resident people!

K.P. offers such a wonderful opertunity in her personal residence within the design space and proffestional design perspective in landscape use and function. Her infasis on native species includes several verieties that must be reintroduced on the landscape due to overgrazing. Choosing local plant species allows us money saving work in gather many local botanicles to create the lush enviornment. Full sun on a south facing hillside is prime reaestate for plants in a cool, temperate zone. We'll be clumping different verieties of plants throughout the bed space to make observation of each species easier. This will give us an idea of which species work best in this environemnt, and even more exciting, show us what species of fauna prefer each plant.

Along with the large pollinator bed, there is also a series of paths which will be developed into clear assess routs by adding drainage, stone slab walk ways, and railings for stairs. There is also a set of cisterns tied into a rainwater catchment system from the building's expansive cover, which will water personal garden beds and the pollinator bed during dry summer months.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Member

Member

A member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation.

Male memberFemale member

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

unverified

PDC

People who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world.

verified

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

pri_verified

PRI PDC

People who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world.

pdc_teacher

PDC Teacher

People who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
