Zumba teacher Maki's home and garden

Project Type

Urban

Project Summary

How Maki got a decluttered house and edible garden, not with money, but fueled by Facebook, good cooking, and the power of Dance.

Project Description

After my Permaculture Creative Life workshop, with my flowers

Your life, your house could be almost unrecognizable two weeks from now.

Here is the story of how Maki Tomiya gathered me up, took me home, and watched the 'Permaculture Fairy' effect take place.

Zumba with Ansling, Maki, Cecilia and our dear leader Leda

She came to two of my workshops. She took a photo of the herb spiral slide, I think she really liked it. She chose the herb spiral postcard, when I was giving them out. Then she chose me.

'Come to Zumba tomorrow, I will pick you up. Then come to our potato planting party. Then I will cook you dinner'.

Maki is a woman of action. She makes stuff, and makes stuff happen.

I'm in!

Before: The garden is unruly. There is nothing wrong with an unruly garden.  Taiga can make his inventions, play chasie with his dad. He can strew things and stomp on things to his hearts content.

But you can get even more fun and life out of a garden, and Maki now has this Permaculture vision.

A woman of action with a vision.

After, week two: Without planning, spending, or any unwilling work, Maki got her herb spiral, and so much more.

What were her resources?

Cooking and parties. Facebook. A rich network of affectionate friends, invested in over many years. Mostly, desire for something lovely.

Akira with a yamori, 'house protecter', and his dad Masa, the carpenter.

The children still have heaps of room to stomp, search and invent in.

Danshari: Japanese decluttering

Sink declutter after

Sink declutter before

Look what we did!

Everyone things I'm a fairy. But I could write it all down, what you do first, what you do next, whats in, whats not, and how to weild the diplomacy that makes it all happen.

Declutter part-done, with new access to the bathroom and garden

Declutter before: Maki's amazing food came from here, every day.

How did we fuel all this?

Delicious lunches and dinners, with Mamas and Papas and children, all coming to have fun, learn something new with their friend Maki

Cakes Maki made to show her Zumba friends she loves them, on White day.

Lunch that takes longer to eat than to prepare, eaten in moving air and dapples, with people you admire.

Its my ideal.

If you aren't creating things you just can't do by yourself, you don't have a lot of reasons to be with other people.

Other people can be what makes life fun.

Maki stories and photos to come

How to be someone whom others want to help: 5 things Maki did right

5 principles of Garden Jazz. No plan, no spending, and no struggle needed. Why not everyone can live life like this, and how you can.

How to make your kitchen sink a shrine, and how that changes everything

Rid yourself of these 8 'weeds of the kitchen'.

Love. Family. Purpose. Its not just for people:  Powerful Declutter basics for the stuff in your life.

How to persuade somebody to get rid of something (Hint: forcing won't work).

How to be surrounded by geniuses: Delegation hints for a super-crew

Which of these stories would you like me to post first?

Send me your declutter miracle ideas and questions, in the next few days. Then they can go in my posts, for everyone to enjoy.

Newsflash: I've extended my stay in Japan till April 25th, 2013

What will I be doing, where will I stay next?

Like my time here with Maki, its going to be a surprise.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
