Welcome to ‘Tiriji (a place of abundance; a place of remembering)’ an ‘edible’ eco-cultural retreat and peace conference center situated in Meru, Kenya . Our vision is to create a holistic center for peace where people find groundedness, connection, blossoming and resilience:
Grounded: People are grounded when they KNOW who they are and have values based in their culture that guide them. In this knowing, they are able to manifest the best solutions for their survival, no matter where they are in the world.
Connected – people who have ‘roots’ have a strong foundation on which to build a sustainable present and future. Thus interconnecting for sustainable futures where we take care of what we have now so that there is enough for us and for future generations.
Blossoming through interdependence: As human species, we cannot thrive in separation – our strength is in interdependence. Even animals live in community – why do we think we are different? We need to learn from Mother nature, the best teacher we ever hope to have!!!
Resilient: Resilience is about the ability to survive no matter the conditions one is in. For us, resilience is embedded in UBUNTU – where we are fully human because we are in community!!
Tiriji is a holistic peaceful retreat, training and conference center for people interested in a cultural and eco-adventure of a lifetime and peace & empowerment programs – meant to birth wholesome wellness, balance and abundance in every area of one’s life. To attain this, our first purpose is enable wholesome people-to-people encounters between people, communities and guests. Our second concern is to develop and put in place regenerative energies, appropriate technologies and sustainable agriculture for a healthy relationship with Mother Earth. Third, we want to create a peace academy space where people come to learn and share effective ways to build peace-full lives, groundedness and resilient communities.
We believe in UBUNTU: that one is a fully human in community – that means, ‘I Am Because You Are’ and together we can transform those societal taken for granted practices that do not enhance human life and the environment. Our eco space brings people together so that we build on our mutual humanity. We thus take care of the land, conserve our environment, enjoy our wildlife and empower people through our peace work at Tiriji.
Our goal is to model ‘simple luxury’ through a high quality, low impact lifestyle; build resilient community that includes integration of marginalized groups in order to tap into the wealth of our diversity; engage in sustainable projects that inspire children, youth, women and men to contribute to sustainable peace and development in our communities; and empower people to remember, reclaim and trust in their capacity to change as individuals, families, communities and nations.

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
