Permaculture Life School

Project Type

School Projects, Educational

Project Summary

We are starting Permaculture Life School, a K-12 homeschool supplemental program to teach kids how to start and run a permaculture homestead/farm, a small business & work in teams, using problem solving and critical thinking.

Project Description

Permaculture Life School will rebuild communities, strengthen families and repair our damaged and poisoned ecosystems. It will guarantee a brighter future than any other option because it works with nature. In fact, permaculture’s vision of the future is abundant, peaceful and joyful, but it doesn’t come without hard work, education & innovation. Located in Sebastopol, CA, we will be splitting our time exploring nature, working on student sites and learning at The Permaculture Skills Center, an international destination and home for the first year-round adult permaculture skills and farm skills program ever. Students will be able to explore the center's extensive permaculture demonstration site and practice permaculture in the back fenced in pasture that is currently untouched. My wife and I with our two boys will share our knowledge, example & presence with 18 students 3 days a week 5 hours a day teaching everything from gardening to home business. Our program will be choice-based, have no grades & be student-centered. We will have special guests and teachers from the local and international community. Our school will be based on the 3 ethics: People Care, Earth Care & Return of Surplus. We will use The Permaculture Student textbook and workbook series in our classes, and all students will receive their own copies to take home and use. Students will regularly work on take-home projects that will be scalable and enhance their homesteads. We will also have time to play in nature. Reconnecting, rewilding & renaturing can’t happen inside or in a cityscape. We have to go to the wilderness to interact with it, & we do it through play & exploration. Regular field trips to developed ecosystems & observing them is how we learn to read the land. Exploration, curiosity & adventure are key ingredients to a memorable & valuable childhood experience. Let's start the revolution with our kids & ensure an abundant tomorrow!

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
