We want to improve a site called ‘Esperanza para los Niños’ to demonstrate Permaculture principles in action. It will emphasize the use of biological resources to lower energy costs and provide some of the need for food and water on the site. The costs savings from these improvements will be reinvested in the facility to improve the lives of the children.
Retrofit House for hot dry climate with insulation protection -- We will retrofit the west side of the building with 2” x 4’ x 8’ panel insulation…then stucco and repaint to provide protection from the hot summer sun Develop recycling systems - compost and greywater -- We will utilize greywater from the showers and washing machines to augment our water resources -- A compost bin will be created near the kitchen and the garden Develop water storage systems - cisterns and basins -- We will maximize water capture and redistribution from roof surfaces on the site -- All trees and vines will be planted in mulched basins to maximize water retention and limit evaporation -- Cisterns will be placed in key locations to provide needed water during the dry summer months Develop small scale intensive gardens -- Three sunken keyhole gardens are planned near the kitchen in Zone 1 Develop solar potential - passive house solar, solar hot water heating and solar panels -- Deciduous vines will be planted on the south facing walls to maximize shade in the summer and allow for passive solar heating in the winter. -- Solar Hot Water Heaters will be placed on the roofs near the boys and girls showers -- Solar Panels will be placed on the south facing roof to provide needed electricity Develop drought tolerant landscape around water harvesting structures -- Velvet Mesquite, Blue Palo Verde and Queen’s Wreath Vine are all drought tolerant species native to this environment which will provide shade to the west, north and east sides of the compound. -- Fig Tree, Orange Tree and Red Globe Seedless Grape Vine are not as drought tolerant, but provide some shade and the desired food for the site.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
