Project Summary

Turning a meadow into a foodforest.

Project Description

After reading a permaculture course, I decided to work with this method regarding to build up the piece of land behind and next to our house. This location was used by a family since 1896, they always were growing their own food and the part of the land in that is further from the house, only had some horses on it. After 5 years building up some experience with growing our own grocery and fruit and herbs and building a bee house too (after a winter education about beekeeping), there are still nice opportunities in the design. We have in mind to create a natural (swimming)pond, extending and creating a better herbs garden, some more trees and bushes and probably a stork nest as there are many storks living here. Also we live next to a natural park and a river, our land is mainly clay and sand. A lot of waterbirds and other birds we can see here. Since we started growing several species of bushes in our garden, we have attracted many birds, also the neighbours are happy with all these birds. Around us is mostly farms with big lands and monoculture. Each year I grow our food self since we live here, I try to do that all year around. In winter we eat wintersalads from the wintergarden made off typical roots that can survive the winter and also wintersalads. I also use a glasshouse for that. As this land is a kind of wild, we still find wild plants we can eat like Cardamine hirsuta, which tastes very good in salads. To survive the winter I also can grocery and fruits in glass and sterilize it (wecken), making jams from fruit, making syrups from fruits and blossoms, making walnut with honey plates to serve with homemade icecreams and yoghurt and many more.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
