Casa Caracol and Villa Caracol are bio-climatic eco homes built in Tulum, in the Mexican Mayan Riviera. Black and Grey water treatment systems, Rain Capture and beautiful gardens, invite the guest to kick back and enjoy a comfortable and modern house in a rural and jungly setting!!
Nestled in between the pristine white beaches of the Mexican Caribbean and the lush jungle lies the enigmatic Mayan city of Tulum; the only one built by the sea. It is located in the Yucatan peninsula just 120 km away from Cancun and borders the Sian Kaan Natural Biosphere reserve to the south. Tulum is divided into three different areas, the beach/hotel zone, the town and the archaeological zone. Tulum has the most spectacular beaches on the Caribbean coast, many still practically virgin and its distinguished by its simple architecture that shows a deep respect for the environment. Its rustic cottages and small hotels were built in total harmony with the natural beauty
Permaculture
philosophy is based on using less energy and resources to achieve the greatest
possible efficiency in a given parcel or home.
Nature is beautiful. In it we find an infinite variety of patterns, shapes,
colors and species coexisting in a symbiotic universe, that follow logic, and
universal principles. The only requirement to live in harmony is to respect
such equilibrium and order.
Casa Caracol is inspired by patterns we find in nature and which are integrated into the architectural design.
The whole universe revolves constantly in a spiral towards infinity. The spiral is the geometric trace governing shells. Due to its structural lines, rhythm, direction and continuity, we find inspiration to imitate them in our architecture. Thus, the inner shell is a sphere, which roundness gives tranquility to man. Hollow cavities have long been sought out as shelter for man's living habitats and homes.
Taking shells as a model, we can design and build basic concepts of function, space, structure and form thus creating a feeling of well being, comfortability, harmony, peace, joy and coziness.
Designed under the philosophy of permaculture and bio-climatics, Casa Caracol is a gem of sustainable design in the Mayan Riviera.
Features
In
Casas Caracol we inforce the separation of organic and inorganic waste. All
organic waste is then thrown into a composting system in order to create
fertile land for the use in the garden.
Our gardens are organic and the waste grey and black water is treated on site
through sand/carbon filters and bio-digesters. Water is then used for
irrigation.
Villa Caracol has Papaya, banana, medlar, melon, passion fruit, tamarind,
mandarins, lettuce, radishes, onions, carrots, sugarcane, tomato, cucumber,
nopal, sweet potatoes, chaya, pumpkin , chilies, and herbs such as basil,
oregano, lemongrass, damiana, mint and epazote.
Permaculture philosophy is based on using less energy and resources to achieve
the greatest possible efficiency in a given parcel or home.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

|
PDC VerifiedPeople who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation. |
|
PRI PDCPeople who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
