About Senem Tufekcioglu

I started my undergraduate studies at Isik University's Faculty of Engineering, attending the Computer Engineering program in Istanbul. Two years later, I decided it was time for a drastic change and instead started studying at the Landscape Architecture program at the Faculty of Forestry in Istanbul University. During my 4 years at the Bahcekoy Campus which is within a forested area, situated 25 km. from the city centre, I had an opportunity to receive a good foundation on ecology, as the faculty offered a sound theoretical education from a variety of departments, as well as a comprehensive applied education in its well kept campus.

Although my studies mostly focused on urban landscape development, I found joy in working as a volunteer in IFSA (International Forestry Student’s Association) and collaborating with students studying Forestry Engineering from all around the world. I participated in two of IFSA’s annual symposiums, first one held in Turkey in 2002 and the second in Canada in 2003, as a representative of Istanbul University. I worked two years with the Web Commission and Language Commission of IFSA.

A frequent visitor of the Ataturk Arboretum, located at a 5 min. walking distance to the campus, I chose to work in the Faculty Nursery for my mandatory summer training. I received my undergraduate diploma, after the successful completion of my thesis on “Natural Gardens”.

After receiving my degree, I couldn't work as a Landscape Architect because I felt that the industry’s work ethics didn’t match mine. Instead, I started working in a publishing company as an editor in training. In the next four years, I worked in media as an editor and web content manager.

I became interested in permaculture after I attended Penny Livingston’s workshop on Urban Permaculture held in Istanbul in October 2009. I continued my research about the subject in my free time and started considering a career change. When I attended Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton’s PDC held in Istanbul in November 2010, it was clear to me that I needed another drastic change in my life path.

In January 2011, I quit my job and joined PRI Turkey. I am currently working towards creating my own course about the practical ways permaculture can be implemented in urban houses/apartments. My course (Practical Permaculture for Home, PPH) is designed for the city life, and targets women in particular.

I am also a contributing writer to PRI Turkey’s website.
