A stab at water harvesting on flat land

Due to the continued drought (along with the pond dropping 5' ) the decision was made to add a flat land water harvesting garden. This thing worked great. Any water overflowing from the swales was directed into this baby. The ground-cover on the outer ring wound up cover the water collected which allowed for the harvest of morning dew as well. The last photo is the ground cover folded back over the outer ring. I didn't bother pulling its main roots out as I want them too continue to grow deeper. I'll let it smother out weeds as I decide what to plant. The inner ring was planted with potatoes, sweet potato runners, peanuts and purple hull.  Sweet potatoes did great as well as the purple hull. Peanuts, potatoes not so good. The Blood Orange in the middle is putting flowers out now so looking forward to tasting one of its goodies.

Rhea Anderson
Rhea Anderson : I was wondering if swaling would work on flat low lying land. I actually live in London but my Mama has 10 acres of low lying clay pasture on 40 acres of mixed woodland, pasture, garden in Allen Parish. I will send her a link to your project

GARY RICHARDSON : This floating garden may be better for dryer areas. Due to my location or simply a lack of experience, I find this structure very high maintenance and am having much better luck with the swales along the back of the property.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
