18-Day Compost

Project: Ca n'Aline 2011

Posted by Aline Van Moerbeke about 13 years ago

The hardest work carried out on the Permablitz was the 18-day compost pile! 18 days have gone by...

And this is the result:

First it was way too hot! The blimming thing was boiling! Lots of white all over the place, especially around the chopped up cactus leaves! Now does this mean this is ashes (a friend mentioned that he heard this explanation, that actually burning can take place?) or is this putrification? It didn't smell off nor burnt, so if anyone has any further. In any case, we added straw!

As it was a very rainy period, we had the pile covered with a tarpaulin and stones on the ground kept the tarp down... until the wind got in and threw the pile over! Stonecold!

Starting from 0?

We threw in another bucket of kitchen scrap as the accelerator and off we go again.

Today, having reached day 18, and turning the pile one day too late due to heavy rains again yesterday, there is lots of dark earth... but there is still lots of straw, and lots of white too, as it was piping hot again today!

Do I carry on turning, hoping that the result will not be an overcooked pile of black earth which is not fertile at all?? I suppose it has to be better than any thing that comes in a bag right?

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
