Project: Hakuna Matata
Posted by Martin Korndoerfer about 12 years ago
On the 3rd of April 2012 the German sister organisation of Hakuna Matata Kenya has seen its first light of day. It has been founded by Hakuna Matata Kenya board members Tammy and Martin Korndoerfer together with a group of friends who were inspired by the idea. The board of directors currently comprises Martin Korndoerfer, Tammy Korndoerfer, Jenny Pfau, and Julia Model as the cashier.
Tammy and Martin explaining the Hakuna Matata Project |
The two main activities of Hakuna Matata Deutschland are fundraising for
projects realised by Hakuna Matata Kenya and organising a child
sponsorship program. There are two types of membership: a free one, just
for interest and one for 10 Euros per month, which will be used 100% to
support orphaned children living in Isiolo and Meru districts. From
these 10 Euros per month the school fees and school materials, food,
clothes and basic medical services will be paid. Muriungi Marete, the
CEO of Hakuna Matata Kenya personally identifies those children most in
need of support.
In
the future HMD will also try to win businesses as sponsors to cover
operational costs and to fund more expensive projects in the framework
of the Hakuna Matata Project.
On
April 14th 2012 we celebrated the founding of Hakuna Matata Deutschland
with a fundraising festival, where friends and colleagues were invited
and could learn more about the project. The earnings of this fundraiser
are put towards our operational costs (bank fees & money transfer
fees) for the next year.
Below are some impressions from the Hakuna Matata Spring Festival.
Introduction to the Hakuna Matata Project |
The festival was held in our garden outside Hamburg, Bergedorf on a luckily dry spring day. Tammy made African dishes after recipes sent by Muriungi's wife Joyce. There was...., ...... and...... as well as chicken kebabs in an marinade of African spices. In the afternoon there was cake, donated from Julia and fairtrade coffee. In the evening people could try out slacklining and we held a beer crate climbing contest. Finally, in the evening the festival closed with a fire show with poi and staff by Tammy and Martin. All in all about 20-25 people celebrated with us and we were able to raise 160 Euros, which will be more than enough to pay for our annual bank fees and for transferring the membership fees to Kenya. So i want to give a big THANK YOU to all of you for coming and donating to the project.

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
