Greenhouse in February

Our new polycarbonate greenhouse holding its own in February 2013.

Some interesting things to note about the greenhouse picture. Notice the floor is
made up of several large chunks of 6-8 inch thick concrete. This solar mass
floor adds lots of stored heat to the greenhouse. You can also see 2 vermiculture
units in the bottom right hand corner. Castings and worm tea are collected and
added to the greenhouse soil. The table that runs around the left side and back
of the picture serves a couple purposes. Besides creating more growing space,
the solid structure provides support for the thin polycarbonate walls, which do
not contain the structural integrity needed to withstand racking and shifting
' that would normally occur. The table surface itself is made of chicken wire,
which allows light to penetrate to below. This system also allows water to drip
to the floor garden area, and also lets soil debris filter down from the work
table to the floor garden.

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
