Back to Namalo Permaculture Demonstration Site and Farm
Project: Namalo Permaculture Demonstration Site and Farm
Posted by Chiel van der Voort about 11 years ago
Since my return from Kyrgyzstan, a quick two week visit to Jordan and two months of immersion in tropical permaculture in Uganda, I've returned to Namalo and gotten things into order.
I realised that the tree nursery was a major bottleneck, so that one was expanded first to a size which now outproduces our treeplanting needs. Karim, my first employee, who joined me in September 2012, used it as an opportunity to strengthen his carpenter skills. After the nursery we added a portable compost toilet, which moves through the garden, leaving behind excellent fruit tree planting sites.
The much anticipated biogas digester was installed, enabling me to cook for myself some of my favourite Dutch dishes! That's some real progress, I reckon. Soon after a kitchen was put in place, which doubles as a garage, dining area, store. For the goats, chicken and ducks another structure has been built, giving them ample space for themselves, their children, and great-great-great-grandchildren to come. Both structures are now enriched with 5000L water tanks, which hopefully provide our livestock and ourselves with ample drinking water. If not we'll build a hall, lounche room, classroom, office later on, with a somewhat bigger roof.
More importantly Nora and Joseph, two other employees, have been planting a few thousand trees, sweet potato cuttings, cassava cuttings and crops throughout the one-acre piece. The food forest seems well underway now!
Also we've developed a diverse kitchen garden, which now provides us with pretty much all our vegetables. Meeting our carbohydrate needs is still one bridge too far.

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
