Project: Parkland Permaculture

Sometimes it pays to leap before you look too hard. I might have spent another year PLANNING to establish a local Permaculture group if one of my co-workers hadn't pushed the issue in the fall by saying "So? When's our first meeting?" I picked a day out of the air, and we have faithfully met on the first Wednesday of the month ever since.
Yesterday we held our first "permablitz"--5 of us there to work, and spouses and kids milling about and enjoying the afternoon together in the freezing wind. (-15C isn't cold for these parts, but isn't the optimal temperature for holding metal tools!)
We met immediately AFTER lunch, so that there would only be one meal to address when we were finished construction... While this made for a somewhat shorter work day, it DID make planning much more manageable. (I expect 5 hours was about as long as any of use could have been expected to labour outside in the cold, anyway)
By 6pm, when we broke for supper (potluck), we had transformed a naked trailer deck into the shell of a portable chicken coop and had assembled the better part of 6 Warre beehives. Everyone had fun and it was great to have the families meet each other. Based on the success of the event, I am certain future blitzes will attract even more interest; there are quite a few people who would never think of coming to a 'meeting', but nevertheless are more than happy to swing a hammer if there is a tangible project to work on.
---
There is a tendency, I think, for us as Permaculturists to spend a lot of time dreaming--which is important--but can lead to a form of "planning paralysis," where we have 1000 ideas, but feel like we can't START!
It is worth remembering an adage I heard years ago: "you can't steer a ship that isn't moving"...without ACTION, too many plans can simply overwhelm us. The ENERGY and ENTHUSIASM generated by tangible endeavours like a "permablitz" provides MOTIVATION to ACT on our dreams...
Momentum.
I can't wait for our next project!

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

Permaculture MatchmakerOne of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile. |
|
PDCPeople who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC VerifiedPeople who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation. |
|
PRI PDCPeople who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
