Project Summary

This is both a "garden manager" and design project. While I am hired to take care of the crops, develop the garden and the activities around it, I've been appointed to take a designing process during the time I will be working there, moslty from March to November 2013.

Project Description

The garden is sepatared in 5 to 6 parts at the moment. It has 4000 sq meters of surface with a gentle slope divided in 3 terraces. There is an old forest just behing the border. It was a previous pine tree forest, and has been cut down to create crops on the site. Downhill, there is a gathering space with a fair surface that can host up to 30 people, where courses, introductions and workhops are given.

The land is owned by one of the core-volunteers, the sister of the main manager of the non-profit organization, Terre & Conscience.

There is already a lot of competencies in the core group of volunteers, and a great sensibility to earth and biosphere problems. The intentions are great, but the knowledge of landscape and community management remain in the mist of the good intentions. There are badly syhcnronized, and the action remain within the scope of the "old way of thinking", ie. interventionism on the site by a landscape designer to built a cool giant-size "manadala" of raised beds to gather "energy flows" emitted by the site, but no work on the keyline or topography whatsoever.

The core group is composed of people around 40-60 years of age, where most of them have a quite good living standard, which makes it interesting to work with.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
