Transforming Our Shiraz Vineyard to a Permaculture Demo and Education Site
Together with my wife Banu, we own a 3000 m2 land in Hoskoy, Tekirdag, Turkey, located 190 km west of Istanbul, 2 km away the shore of Marmara Sea, at an altitute of ca. 215 mt. (40.42'45'' N - 27.17'36'' E)
We decided to turn the land within next five years into a Permaculture Demo Site which shall be designed based on Permaculture principles to satisfy the requirements of PRI Master Plan MOU. The site will serve interested people from Istanbul and around who will be able to visit the site during the weekends to see the permaculture applications in a nutshell. Accomodation and catering will be provided at Hoskoy village. A volunteer-based work system will be established to provide some practical experience for interested volunteers.
The vision is, with the acquisition of neighboring land spots, within 10 years, to turn the site into Permaculture Research Institute - Marmara (hopefully to become a branch of PRI Turkey, and with an accreditation from PRI Australia) where PDC trainings and internship programs will be provided.
The land currently has 1000 m2, 270 pieces of Shiraz grape plants (planted in 2000), ca. 70 pieces of fruit trees with many variety (apple, pears, quins, apricot, peach, sweet cherry), olive and chessnut trees. No infrastructure, no building, no fencing.
The Demo Site Project will last for five years and will incorporate water systems (swales, ponds, drip lines, solar water pumps, water tanks, water pressurizers, grey water bed, rain water collection system), crop gardening, herb spiral, rocket stove, greenhouse, chicken tractor, fencing, duck pond, dog house, stove oven, compost station, compost worm bin, composting toilets, maximum possible diverse variety of plants.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
