Project Summary

Creation of an organic garden in suburban New Jersey starting in 1998. At first 6 raised beds were created, then 5 more. In 2009 I've become a master gardener and in 2014 became a permaculture designer. My suburban garden now feeds many families with delicious, nutritious and healthy produce.

Project Description

In my 20-plus raised beds I am growing a large amount of parsley (which seems to keep the squirrels away from my tomatoes), 5 different kinds of basil, kohlrabi, red celery, four different kinds of garlic, three different kinds of kale, (I love kale), five different kinds of lettuce, two different kinds of cucumbers, amaranth, two different kinds of mushrooms (shiitake and wine cap), eggplants, dill, oregano, cilantro and several other items that don’t come to mind right now. All is plenty and there is plenty of all.

I have also planted bush beans, peas, radishes, six or seven different kinds of peppers hot and sweet, plus five different varieties of heirloom tomatoes, each one a piece of heaven or at least heavenly wonderful.

Each and every plant is a part of a system and each element complements each other. Permaculture is truly a beautiful thing. In every raised bed, instead of planting one variety or specie of vegetable like before, I now plant at least three different plants and herbs together.

	PRI Teacher With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
	Aid Worker The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to be involved in permaculture aid work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture aid worker experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.
	Consultant The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to do paid permaculture design consultancy work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture consultancy experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.
	Community Project Community projects are projects that help develop sustainable community interaction and increase localised resiliency.
