Laya Point Permaculture is nestled in the hidden Duddon Valley of the Lake District. Based at an old school established in the mid 19th century, the school rests on a one acre plot and has been converted into a large vegetable garden of 33 beds on the former playing tarmac, as well as fledgling forest garden. Over the stone wall boundary lies the glacially shaped fields smattered with immovable boulders. Beyond that runs the iconic Duddon River, forests and the wild heather, juniper, and bilberry riddled scree and fells. We host permaculture workshops and retreats.
Laya Point is a Permaculture (ad)venture situated at The Old School in the Cumbrian Lake District hamlet of Ulpha. Established in 2012 by Nicole Hermes and Tom Dennison, it is the creative offshoot of our own Permaculture design.
After two years in South-East Asia, we made the decision to put down some roots and put our understanding of Permaculture ethics and design principles to the test. In 2012, we moved back to England and set about transforming a disused school playing field into our own ‘Garden of Eden’.
The Old School has been an amazing place for us to discover, experiment and implement all the good stuff that comes along with Permaculture, such as annual and perennial food production, small space and high yield systems, poly-culture forest gardening, homesteading skills, natural building and so much more. Little by little, our aim of turning this one acre site into an enchanting, fun and productive example of Permaculture in practice is coming to fruition.
Through the creation of Laya Point Permaculture, we hope to establish a space where people, friends and teachers are able to exchange skills and support through a variety of residential courses and weekend workshops.
As we grow, we hope to support local teachers, highlight best-practice techniques, draw focus to local and renewable resources and contribute to the wide array of community enterprises germinating in the region.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
