Old 99 Farm & Permaculture Site

Project Type

Rural, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

Small scale mixed agriculture with livestock (ruminants and poultry) and four season vegetable production for local food supply via internet, www.old99farm.locallygrown.net

Project Description

In 2007 I came on this piece of land, which had been farmed for over 100 years, original buildings were still standing and suitable to be put into service. I started with a permaculture charrette led by Peter Bane and Keith Johnson, which helped create the overall design for the 22 acre parcel. This includes 15 acres workable land, 2 acre woodlot, 3 acre buildings and residence and 1 acre pond. Darren Doherty was in the area, and came for a consultation on land use.

Now four years later, I have a functionning farm, on permaculture principles.Animal husbandry: 15 Canadian Lineback cattle (for milk and meat, manure), a heritage breed, a dozen sheep, 100 chickens, various geese and ducks, and a Maremman lifestock guardian dog to keep all safe from predators.

Two 2000 sf greenhouses have been erected and in use for 2 years, providing green vegetables year round. A mixed orchard was planted in 2008 and is managed organically. Bees are kept onsite for honey and pollination. Maple sugaring is done each spring.

Future project elements include aquaculture in the pond, commercial geese and duck production. and a farm scale ethanol still, biochar production and smoke house.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
