About Benjamin Standring

I am from Queensland Australia, I left Australia for new frontiers over here in Chile where I met my wife and started my family. I discovered permaculture after looking for a way to grow organic food and haven't looked back. I left behind my career for the mines as a mechanical engineer designer of equipment to pursue a simple life.

We are still in transition but finding our feet with new skills in internet marketing and organic seo that support ethical practices and we continue to boycott institutionalised society on our quest for complete independence and sustainability.

We have a one and a half acre block of land on a cliff face - steep incline with little, 200mm max, annual rainfall and a long hot summer. I bought the place when I was a bogan engineer so it was completely for the view, lol. Luckily it has the right aspect but there is so much difficulty with cultivating on it. We have spent the last year doing macro excavation (by hand) to support the existing fruit trees that are only a few years old max to alleviate some of the water needs during summer as well as recharge ground water and stop the huge erosion problem. I continually collect seeds from native plants in the area and scatter them everywhere especially the local "pest" everyone cuts down, the espino (acacia caven) that grows out of a rock its so hardy!! I can't see any other way to do this without money because we need shade for summer and something to improve soil quality...
