The Permaculture Volunteer Programme at Camp Muhaka is part of the organization’s efforts to establish itself as a permaculture demonstration, research and education site on the coastal region of Kenya. Together with the Permaculture Research Institute of Kenya (PRI-Kenya), Camp Muhaka has developed a permaculture design for its 3-acre farm that includes a greywater system, production of fruits, cereals and vegetables as well as cash crops such as chillies and moringa, a woodlot, a nursery and a composting system. Facilities for outreach work with local farmers are also being developed, including food-processing facilities like oil presses and food dryers. The farm is also integrated with the new Polytechnic for the local community, with the aim of teaching useful skills to local youth in an effort to try and address unemployment in the area.
As a Permaculture volunteer you will be working alongside trained Camp Muhaka staff on the farm to help develop and maintain the permaculture design. You will also be joining in outreach efforts, implementing permaculture projects with local farmers and in local schools. There is also the option of adding on a Permaculture Design Certificate Course to your program. This two week, internationally recognized course will give you a certificate in permaculture design and put you on the path towards becoming a Permaculture Designer, Consultant or Teacher. It will also give you the background knowledge and the inspiration for your time as a permaculture volunteer.
