Back to Permaculture Galveston
Project: Permaculture Galveston
Posted by Dana Crawford almost 10 years ago
It's been 7 months since this local group was created on Facebook. With the help of Mark Juedeman and Rob Williams of Transition Houston as well as members of the recent PDC class at Urban Harvest, the group has grown to 76 members. Some have joined not because they live in Galveston or Galveston County, but because it is the closest permaculture group to them. The longer my tenure here, the more I see permaculture principles in action all around like Island Aquaponics who built their own system right next to the Farmer's Market and harvested rainwater for the system. There is also Moon Dog Farms, a sustainable agriculture farm in Santa Fe that provides us with fresh veggies and flowers at the same market.
The primary focus of this project is on completing a series of public projects on Galveston Island to help build community connections and resilience as well as to demonstrate permaculture on the ground. The current project, planned for this Spring, is to install a Butterfly Garden in the nature strip along the street in front of San Jacinto Community Garden. Established about 15 years ago, San Jacinto is the oldest community garden in Galveston and is home to a historic Rosenberg Fountain. The plan for this demonstration garden includes multi-functional plants, water-harvesting, and a frog pond. I will attach some images so that you can see the design, which is still a work in progress. Suggestions and feedback are welcome.
Enjoying the journey,
Dana

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
