some perennials we are trialling here

Project: East Ismailof Island Permaculture homesite

pictures of little perennial plants we are establishing here and brief description of our efforts.

One of our homesite goals is to have an abundance of perennial food plants.  This update is about my efforts in this direction.

I have planted several perennial food sources, and the Jerusalem Artichokes seem the happiest so far.

I also planted stachys affinis and they have come up and look promising

camassia quamash is alive and growing

i put seeds of sagittaria latifolia in soil under water in several large tin cans, some outside, some in a cold frame, and some indoors.  None have come up yet.

I planted a number of caragana arborescens and hippophae rhamnoides outdoors

I tried growing goji from seed and have 3 survivors, all very tiny.

there are egyptian walking onions which have overwintered

i have started seeds of chicory, asparagus, and salsify

i planted bulbs of apios americana, but the magpies ate them all.  Next time i will start them in pots...

PLEASE comment with your suggestions for rampant tasty food plants for this climate.  I'm looking for things that are perennial, really yummy, big producers, and easy to grow.  We are in koppen cfc, subarctic climate, but usda zone 6, which is basically a very mild subarctic climate moderated by the ocean. 59 degrees north latitude, summer highs 60f, winter lows 20f, max hi 80f, max lo-10f,   25inches precipitation/year, dry summers

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
