About Corey Schmidt

I grew up in Nevada, Missouri, USA, living in the country after age 11. I graduated from Truman State University with a bs in linguistics in 2003. Soon after i became interested in permaculture and read the Manual. I helped found Red Earth Farms in northeast Missouri early 2005, but then started doing construction jobs and moved to Alaska. Now I'm a self-employed carpenter, and recently rekindled my interest in a big way and became a certified permaculture designer.
I live with my wife in a self built and designed passive solar cabin in Halibut Cove, which is an interesting combo of suburban and wilderness. We use only rain falling on the property for most of our water needs -drinking, cooking, bathing, gardening-. I am passionate about increasing our food production and general sustainability using permaculture principles and I'm very excited to begin helping others reach their goals for a sustainable future equipped with the tools from the PDC. I'm Currently beginning to establish a very small section of food forest beginning with caragana arborescens and hippophae rhamnoides as support species. I am excited to trial the nut pines, especially pinus koraiensis here. I would love to participate in the full permaculture design and implementation of a property soon, from water harvesting earthworks to building and planting.
