• We have
57 fruit and nut trees in the ground (17 different varieties). Many of them have already grown 6 inches in just a couple weeks (crazy)! If you want to know the varieties, I'll include them in the next update.
• We have a cover crop of over
8000 beans (6 different varieties) growing in our food forest.
• We have
500 Kales, 150 cabbages, 100s of onions, 100 spinaches, 200 Managu, and a few tomatoes in the ground.
Our goal is to start feeding the kids in the next 2 months! • We've planted
bamboo as well as a small plot of
sugar cane sprouting. We've also planted over
150 flowers and other decorative plants.
• Today we finished our
second fish pond (of 5) and have planted a section of sunflowers as well.
• The fence has also been mended to keep the cows at bay.
• Next month, we'll be
building our greenhouse and demonstration space. • We're
working on partnerships with local universities to do workshops for the boys covering basic construction, animal husbandry, and fish farming.
So, we're moving along. :)
The kids have been a part of much of the development thus far and continue to ask questions about why certain aspects are done in a certain way (which is great). It's been neat to see the kids loving this effort. One of my favorite little workers is Keriuki. This kid has some serious heart and runs to grab shovels and the wheelbarrow as soon as I show up. :)
