After completing my first modul of Permaculture Design with PIA we jumped in with both feet, stopped mowing our lawn and created two Hugel beds with a swale in between.
It was a great way to put old rotting wood to good use. Our neighbours we happy to contribute grass cuttings from their lawns. The kids and I enjoyed planting kolrabbi, root celery (Celeriac), onions, garlic. One bed was dedicated to pumpkins. This was all done in 2008.
Now our raised beds sport posts with interwoven branch walls which actually act as fortifications to keep all the good grob mulch material contained.
The current challenge is to reduce the effects of slugs in an ethical manner.
