Permaculture and Ethical Business, Wormticklers Nursery

Posted by Benson Anthony over 4 years ago

Post PDC/PIA at Zaytuna Farm, alongside self lead study I felt I was lacking specialisation in a particular field that could further make me of use both on the ground and during the design process. Alongside detailed and elaborate citizen science'esc Mycology discoveries in my local area and abroad: from categorisation to spore print and identification and further to mushroom culitvation and even consultation, I wanted to learn more.

This wanting found me looking desperately for what I deemed an "Ethical" business/job that aligned with the Permaculture principles and that could aid me in my learning journey.

Then came, "Wormticklers". Wormticklers is based in Sydney's Kenthurst and recently at 'The Farm' in Australias iconic Byron Bay. It is an organic wholesale nursery growing quality chemical free seedlings using permaculture principles and organic techniques. From seasonal herbs, veggies and greens they also specialise in companion plants and edible flowers. With Permie Jordan Sly at the helm (alumni to Nick Ritar @ Milkwood) this opportunity was one not to be missed.

I got in contact and here we are one year later. Jordan has been an extremely generous teacher and is as knowledgeable as he is charming and goofy. He has mentored me, answered stupid questions, and provided me with the ideal environment to learn about the bith cycle of our food systems. I cannot give a big enough shoutout to Wormticklers, a business working alongside competitive farmers and nurseries who still operate in an old school exploitative capitalist driven system. Never getting frustrated, Jordan and "the Ticklers" move with grace, grow with love, and I am proud to be a apart of their team.
