We have new trees! We are very excited to have a shagbark hickory and a damson plum to add to our future harvests. Damson plums are especially hardy and have been confirmed growing as far back as Mesopotamia!
Clearing the land is an everyday struggle. The trees are being strangled by oriental bittersweet, Japanese honeysuckle, common greenbriar, and of course, poison ivy. Other invasives include multiflora rose and wineberry. Did I mention that thorns and I don't get along?
But here's the real kicker: the soil is full of trash! We're hauling it out by the wheelbarrow load. And the things we're finding are getting stranger and stranger. A belt sander; a liquor bottle from approximately 1945; heavy metal arches that were finally identified as washing machine counterweights!
Never a dull moment!
