Project Summary

Terganic Farmstay is an off-grid permaculture farmstay and regenerative education centre in the southeast of Mauritius. Located within La Meule Eco-Hamlet, it transforms former degraded sugarcane land into a productive, biodiverse landscape through food forests, agroforestry, vegetable gardens, integrated animal systems, composting, and contour-based water-harvesting earthworks. The farmstay combines ecological restoration with immersive guest experiences, offering hands-on learning, guided visits, workshops, and regenerative design consulting. It serves as a practical model of climate-appropriate, culturally rooted resilience for small island environments and tropical regions of Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Project Description

Terganic Farmstay is an off-grid permaculture farmstay and regenerative education centre located within La Meule Eco-Hamlet in the southeast of Mauritius. Developed by Terganic Regenerative Ltd, it stands on 27 acres of former degraded sugarcane land at the foot of Mountain Bambous, where the Rivulet Bambous runs along the valley. The site is undergoing a long-term ecological transformation, guided by permaculture design, regenerative agriculture, and appropriate low and high-tech resilience strategies adapted for small island tropical climates. The landscape is being regenerated through a combination of food forests, agroforestry systems, orchards, vegetable gardens, contour-aligned water-harvesting earthworks, and integrated animal systems. Swales, ponds, and berms capture and infiltrate rainwater through the slopes, while composting, mulching, and soil-building practices restore fertility across former monoculture cane fields. The farm integrates chickens, ducks, rabbits, quails, goats, sheeps and in a way that contributes to soil improvement, pest management, and ecosystem balance. Every system is designed to be productive, biodiverse, and grounded in ecological function. As the educational heart of La Meule Eco-Hamlet, Terganic Farmstay offers guided visits, hands-on workshops, immersive stays, and regenerative design consulting for students, landowners, farmers, NGOs, and visitors from Mauritius and abroad. Guests have the opportunity to participate in daily farm activities and see ecological systems operating in real time—from composting and agroforestry maintenance to water harvesting, animal systems, and low-to-high technology infrastructure. The immersive experience allows visitors to understand not only the techniques but also the mindset and cultural relevance of regenerative living on a small island. The farmstay works in synergy with La Petite Ferme, our sister micro-farm with three eco-lodges, and is supported by Lakaz Kana, a communal table d’hôtes and gathering space where meals, workshops, and community events are hosted. The wider Eco-Hamlet is also home to the Ravine Cilicie Endemic Forest Restoration Project, which focuses on restoring native biodiversity, replanting endemic species, and protecting the ecological heritage of the valley. Terganic Farmstay has gained international recognition through its participation in SEED.UNO’s Switch Africa Green programme and invitations from the United Nations Environment Programme to present the project in Burkina Faso and later at UN Environment headquarters in Kenya, in collaboration with the Mauritius SME sector. The Eco-Hamlet is also recognised as a Saint Kateri Habitat, and our work has been featured widely in Mauritian media and in French press, helping raise awareness of regenerative land management and climate-adaptive design. Today, Terganic Farmstay stands as a living example of ecological restoration, sustainable hospitality, and community resilience, demonstrating how degraded land can be transformed into a productive, culturally rooted, and biodiverse habitat. The long-term vision is to continue expanding its educational reach, host internationally recognised permaculture courses, and contribute to regenerative development across Mauritius, the Indian Ocean region, and tropical Africa.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Member

A member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation.

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

unverified

PDC

People who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world.

verified

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

pri_verified

PRI PDC

People who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world.

pdc_teacher

PDC Teacher

People who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.

Aid Worker

The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to be involved in permaculture aid work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture aid worker experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.

pri_teacher

Consultant

The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to do paid permaculture design consultancy work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture consultancy experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.
