Permaculture Master Plan for the Satyananda Yoga Ashram, with David Holmgren
David approached me to work alongside him for the Ashram after they approached him to develop a master plan for the long term vision for sustainability of the community. It is fantastic to be working in the field of sustainability nit only in the context of land development, but with the strong focus of the ongoing human context, expressed in this instance as a community with a strong belief in the development of human/nature relationship. (It was great doing an hour of meditation in the middle of the consult! It certainly opens up perspective.)
It is increasingly more pertinent to the long term viability of projects to have a solid foundation on connection to the land. Spiritual connection is open to anyone, there are many connections between the teachings of spiritual wisdom and permaculture principles. Development of this understanding lies at the foundation to survival of humanity.
We looked at more traditional permaculture design principles to improve water harvesting, food production, fire management, solar gain, resource management, animal management, along with community relationship with the outside world and the local communities, transport, politics and the future of the Ashram in a world of change.
I am very lucky to be working alongside the master of Permaculture, I am humbled by David's capacity to not only read landscape, but to grasp so succinctly the detailed psycho-social dynamics in relation to permaculture principles and cultural contexts.
This project has led to the development of a cool-climate based PDC at the Ashram, with David Holmgren and Ian Lillington. The course incorporates daily yoga practice alongside intensive permaculture study, it promises to be a very interesting course!
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
