Lifelong ecologist and "alternative" thinker and dreamer. Love of nature led me pursue a degree in Environmental and Resource Engineering form College of Forestry @ Syracuse NY. Have had a garden for most of my life.
Got married in 2006 and moved to my wife's home in Saratoga Springs. The south facing home was surrounded by conifers and the soil was practically beach sand. We began cutting the conifers out of the front, opening up the sun. We bought some landscaping blocks and built up a garden area. The next door neighbor said he was going to cut down the fast growing white pine trees that bordered own property. A big sun window opens up, and we plant a garden there. So does the neighbor. We share in our production. We start looking at expanding into fruit trees and shrubs. Our research leads us to forest gardening and permaculture. We are smitten.
Now that much of our yard is edible, we are moving into the back yard, planning a passive solar greenhouse. We purchased a solar electric system in 2014, so now are getting power from the sun. We spent the spring taking the PDC course aat openpermaculture.com, and are completing the design of our property for the certification as I write this. We want infect others in our community with this permaculture bug. The last open tract of farmland in our town has just been secured for farming forever by a local land conservancy; our dream is to make that parcel a permaculture education center for the region, and convert the corm monoculture into a food forest. The city High School is across the street, and we would love to have permaculture become part of their curriculum!
