About Rachel Nakatani

I moved to San Diego, CA from the Sacramento area in 2008 in pursuit of a business degree from SDSU. I graduated in 2012 with a degree in Human Resource Management, as helping people within the workplace appealed more to me than crunching numbers, brainwashing the public for profit, and analyzing economical trends. I've always known my place in this world is to help people, I just never knew it would be through Permaculture until earlier this year.

During my post-grad 3-month backpacking trip through Europe in 2012, I met a group of acroyogis and slackliners who introduced me to the concept of Permaculture. Two years later, after undergoing holistic approaches to lifelong health problems, I discovered the benefits of natural living. I became obsessed with the idea of creating my own self-sufficient life, with full control over my food supply and chemical exposure. After almost a decade, I found myself incredibly discontent and burnt out with my work in the service industry, and decided to manifest positive change in my life. I signed up for permie forums, and bought a ticket to PV2 from a woman in Santa Cruz who wasn't able to attend. During Paul Stamets' speech about mycelial networks, goosebumps covered my body as I finally felt that every decision, interaction, and experience in my life had led me to that moment. Finally, I had an outlet to share my politics, hobbies and interests, and passion for helping people and the planet!

I recently completed Geoff Lawton's Online Permaculture Design Course, and am excited to start building my network and skill set. I'm particularly interested in soil building, mycoremediation, and homesteading. My dream is to have my own self-sustaining holistic farm, where I can teach others the valuable and inspirational lessons of permaculture and catalyze positive, productive action.

I'm leaving San Diego on June 30th and will be available for projects anywhere around the world. Let me know how I can help!
