About Joanne Lee Rolt

I have been committed to community development and greening in disadvantaged areas in South Africa for the past 7 years. My passion for the environment and skills development came after completing a photographic thesis entitled ‘Documenting the People and Events Surrounding the Upliftment and Development of Disadvantaged Areas in Gauteng and the North West’. During my final year of studying I became involved with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) and was exposed to a whole new world filled with possibilities.

After completing the thesis and my Bachelor’s Degree in Technology, Photography, I knew that I had found my calling, and it wasn’t my original dream of becoming a photographer. I developed a very keen interest in the environment and issues surrounding sustainability and food security in South Africa during the time spent doing research for my thesis.

Through my position as Programme Manager at FTFA, I have been able to make a positive impact on many communities through the running of the Trees for Homes and EduPlant programmes. Both programmes have grown tremendously over the past 6 years, calling for rapid growth and development of systems, resources and materials
